Just Don\u2019t Do Stupid Stuff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When it comes to achieving a good life, we often think about the things we need to start doing. The habits we need to add. The practices we need to optimize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yet research, and reams of anecdotal experience, show that avoiding negative things has a far bigger influence on outcomes than adopting positive ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Studies have found that while being a bad parent has a huge effect on how children develop, being a super involved parent \u2014 making it to every school meeting, helping with every project \u2014 has very little; as long as you\u2019re not violent\/abusive\/neglectful, kids turn out fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Same thing with health: taking a walk will not have as powerful an impact as quitting smoking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even the religious moral laws, the Ten Commandments, consist almost entirely of \u201cthou shall nots.\u201d Don\u2019t kill, don\u2019t lie, don\u2019t steal, don\u2019t envy, don\u2019t cheat, and your life is probably going to turn out alright.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You\u2019ll never even get a chance to work on the higher \u201cshalls,\u201d if your life\u2019s been wrecked by ignoring the \u201cshall nots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While we get so anxious trying to figure out the best, cleverest things to do, it\u2019s really the things you <em>don\u2019t<\/em> do \u2014 the bullets successfully dodged \u2014 that get you most of the way there. <strong>You win by not losing.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is remarkable how much long-term advantage people have gotten by trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to achieving a good life, we often think about the things we need to start doing.
