The remote control no longer works properly. The car makes strange noises.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I reach for a screwdriver and spend the next hour trying to repair it. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don&#8217;t. But I almost always try. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My kids probably think I&#8217;m stubborn. Maybe a little old-fashioned. Why spend an hour fixing something you could replace in minutes?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But it&#8217;s never really been about the money.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I open up something broken and figure out what went wrong, I&#8217;m not just fixing an object. I&#8217;m doing the thing I&#8217;ve always done \u2014 being the one who solves problems, who keeps things going, who makes sure the family doesn&#8217;t have to worry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psychology calls this Identity Theory. We build our sense of self around the roles we carry for years. For me, one of those roles has always been the guy who fixes things. The provider. The problem solver. After decades of living that role, it becomes part of how you see yourself.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So when something breaks, walking past it and ordering a new one feels wrong. It feels like giving up on something more than just the object.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There&#8217;s also memory in these things. A repaired lamp has a history. A patched-up chair has been part of a hundred evenings together. Replacing them doesn&#8217;t just cost money \u2014 it erases something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fixing things is, in its own quiet way, how I say <em>I&#8217;m still here.
